As you can read on this page, Facundo Jones Huala is a Logko (leader) who was involved in the fight of the Pu Lof (community) Cushamen against the plundering of their territory by Benetton. In this conflict, activist Santiago Maldonado was also murdered.
Facundo Jones Huala was the victim of a criminalization campaign, as an extension of the ongoing campaign suffered by the Mapuche people, both in Chile and Argentina. His extradition was requested by the Chilean government, but the reason for which was not questioned by the Argentine government, leaving him in legal limbo.
Now, Logko Facundo Jones Huala began a DRY STRIKE on November 18, after receiving the news of the ratification of his extradition to Chile. It is the second time this year that the leader of the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM) uses this pressure method. By November 20, his health had deteriorated.
That is why from here, we echo his situation, while asking for international solidarity with Facundo to be redoubled. Likewise, we demand once again his release.

Why do you make that decision?
Because all the allowed and “legal” forms that are proclaimed by the Argentine State have not been respected.
The logko has faced a new extradition trial, tied hand and foot, since all the evidence and witnesses offered were REJECTED. In other words: IT IS NOT THAT THERE ARE NO REASONS FOR NON-EXTRADITION, BUT THAT THE JUDGE, UNILATERALLY, REJECTED THEM.
What is a DRY STRIKE and what consequences does it have?
A DRY STRIKE is a direct action of extreme demonstration in the face of a specific injustice. The person not only stops eating solid food, but also does not consume liquids in any way. cTherefore, a DRY STRIKE is a fighting tool that puts a person’s health at severe risk, which can even lead to death.
And this is a matter of DAYS (between 2 and 7 days, depending on the person’s health). In the case of Logko, his health is deteriorating especially due to kidney problems, among other things, so this extreme decision will definitely leave long-term consequences.
In the first 12 HOURS of not drinking water, Logko has lost 4 kilos 600 grams, starting with a weight of 81,500 kg and reaching 76,600. He already started having headaches, dizziness and dry mouth.
Why is the request for NO EXTRADITION insisted?
For several compelling reasons.
According to Law 24,767, on International Cooperation in Criminal Matters of Argentina, in its Article 8, “extradition will not proceed when:
- The crime that motivated it was a political crime.”
Logko Facundo is definitely a political prisoner, recognized by Chile for having allowed him, throughout his stay in the neighboring country, to be in the MAPUCHE POLITICAL PRISONERS pavilion. And that is more than proven in their hundreds of demonstrations that vindicate their ancestral right as a pre-existing people to the states and that from no point of view is the conviction for the crime they are accused of at random, but rather under a permanently political profile in all its aspects. speeches. - “ The process that motivates the extradition shows persecutory purposes based on the political opinions, nationality, race or religion of the people involved (…)”
This is another paragraph that motivates the request for NO EXTRADITION, given that the Logko Weichafe, through their manifest actions and consistent speeches, claim the right granted by their ancestry, but also by the Argentine Constitution itself, which RECOGNIZES and GRANTS special rights for belonging to Indigenous Peoples, pre-existing to the States, rights that DO NOT EXIST in the neighboring country of Chile and not only that, but those people who claim to be such are systematically persecuted.
Their political opinions, their manifest nationality, their belonging to an indigenous people, their spirituality, clearly mobilize the status quo of the country requiring extradition.
What is the current situation of Logko?
According to Art. 36 of the same law cited above, the denial would be expected from the Argentine President, Mr. Alberto Fernández, who is the one who has that power. We are facing extreme gravity and urgency, since the 10 business days for the President to rule and deny the extradition would expire next Friday.
The previous extradition was granted, between roosters and midnight, by the right-wing government of Mauricio Macri.
Will this government, apparently standing in conflict with the previous and subsequent governments, do exactly the same thing? Or will it make a difference with its adversaries by immediately denying NON-EXTRADITION and reaffirming the rights proclaimed in the National Constitution, as well as in International Treaties?
We remember that the logko is being held in Unit 14 of Esquel, a few kilometers from the territory recovered in 2015, KvraMapu, and that he only has 7 months left to complete the sentence imposed by Chile. On June 26, 2024, Logko would serve his sentence.
In addition, there is a formal request for completion of the sentence in Argentina, which the Chilean Ministry of Justice should issue as soon as possible.
In all these years, Logko has demonstrated a good predisposition to serve his sentence, he has had impeccable discipline in all the pavilions he has been in and, with only 7 months remaining on his sentence, it would be very appropriate for him to be allowed to remain in his territory. , where his affections and family circle meet.

From the Autonomous Mapuche Movement of Puelmapu and the Mapuche ancestral resistance we inform that as of Saturday, November 18, 2023, our lonko weichafe Facundo Jones Huala, Mapuche political prisoner housed in federal penitentiary unit No. 14 in the city of Esquel Puelmapu.
He has decided to begin an indefinite dry hunger strike to demand our political and territorial rights as a Mapuche nation, his non-extradition to Ngulumapu (Chile) and his immediate freedom, taking into account that he has complied with the law according to the law of the Argentine state. and he is only 8 months away from completing his sentence imposed by the Chilean state.
