More than 200 organisations have signed a manifesto calling for measures to address the country’s worsening climate crisis and protect the rainforest. The document denounces the impact of the current economic model, which is destroying the rainforest and causing catastrophes throughout the country, causing deaths and making people’s lives more precarious in the name of profit for large international corporations.
More than 200 organisations, including trade unions, popular movements, NGOs, religious entities and others, launched on Wednesday 5 September a ‘Manifesto in Defence of the Amazon’, which warns against the intense attacks on the rainforest by agribusiness, mining and the energy sector.
The document states that the devastation of the biome is directly related to the climate crisis, which has a particular impact on the lives of the working class through fires, droughts, water insecurity, landslides and floods.

On 5 September 2024 we celebrate a new Amazon Day in Brazil. There will be demonstrations in various parts of our country to draw attention to the serious environmental and climate crisis we are experiencing.
There is little to celebrate. Although we have taken up forest protection and restructured control and inspection bodies, the climate crisis we are experiencing has intensified in recent years in a way we have never seen before: we have suffered landslides on the northern coast of São Paulo, floods in Rio Grande do Sul, heat waves in Rio de Janeiro, and now we are in the midst of the worst drought ever recorded in the Amazon basin, and smoke spreading across more than one state caused by fires.
We cannot stand by and watch, we have to act.
At least since 1972, with the World Conference on Man and the Environment, known as the Stockholm Conference, the world has been aware of the link between environmental destruction and global warming. Since then, the situation has worsened despite all the international conferences and debates proposed by governments and states. Data show that greenhouse gas emissions have increased dramatically over the last 50 years. That the emissions projected for 2050, with serious consequences for humanity, will occur in 2030, 20 years earlier than expected, worsening the living situation of millions of people around the world.
Looking at this history, we can see that the current economic model based on the accumulation of capital at any cost is leading humanity to disaster. Those who suffer the most are the working class, especially the poorest and most precarious, black and indigenous people, and above all women and children, especially in developing countries.
By demonstrating on Amazon Day, we want to contribute to the awareness of the Brazilian people, so that we all have more information about the facts and the main causes of this serious environmental crisis and the destruction of the Amazon in particular. We are talking about very powerful sectors of our ruling class: financial capital, agribusiness, mining and energy transnationals that privatise our common goods, among others.
Those who deforest and burn our forests burn our future, and are enemies of the Brazilian people and enemies of humanity, and must be held accountable for their crimes. We are not just talking about those who set fires in the forest or in the countryside, but about a powerful chain of interests, with a strong presence in political institutions, that puts profit above all else and destroys our common future. It is the economic model that needs to be changed.
We need to promote social, cultural and technological development programmes that help to pull our country out of the traps of dependent capitalism and whose basic premise is respect for life and the environment as a whole. We must demand that our country has a project based on sovereignty with distribution of wealth and popular control.
Finally, on this day we must commit ourselves to expanding our organisational work, raising the level of awareness and socio-environmental commitment of all the Brazilian people, and especially of all the populations living in the areas most affected by extreme events. We stand alongside those who have historically been responsible for the defence of life and the Amazon: indigenous peoples, riverside dwellers, extractivists, peasants and also the urban working class. Only the organised people, with a unified project and struggle, is capable of proposing real solutions.
We commit ourselves to promoting, proposing and demanding that governments and authorities increasingly honour their commitment to economic justice, social justice and environmental justice with the broad participation and protagonism of our peoples.
We also demand that the international organisations, governments and companies of the countries that have historically generated high levels of pollution now pay the bill for the damage they have done to humanity so far.
On this Amazon Day, we must all recognise that defending the Amazon is defending life, life is life.
